King of Panthera
King of Panthera
2014. ACRYLIC, CHALK PASTEL AND CHARCOAL ON PAPER. 13’ 4” X 9’ 4”.
—
King of Panthera was created as Tang’s graduation piece from Emily Carr University of Art & Design. This mural has caught major media attention, including the cover page of The Province.
This is the largest mural ever by Tang, spanning over 13 feet. This drawing represents her battle to fight for her passion in art, and her struggle to execute this project. The hungry tiger dives into water to catch his prey. He is caught with his paws spread wide and claws extended, ready to fight for his survival. The process prior to beginning the piece took hours of careful hand sanding of the wall to ensure there is no damage on the paper. The installation itself requires multiple people, ladders, and a lift machine. There was a moment where King of Panthera may have not happened entirely, due to faculty and students complaining of dust accumulated from charcoal and the amount of space it required. Wooden planks and large sheets of plastic were assembled temporarily to encompass her working space for her to carry on with the project. The final result is a tremendous, ferocious tiger, not ready to back down for anything.
