Carcass of the Grey Whale Calf
Carcass of the Grey Whale Calf
2013. CHALK PASTEL AND ACRYLIC ON PAPER. 6’ 5” X 5’.
—
Carcass of the Grey Whale Calf is a mural inspired from a very moving scene in a documentary about life in the deep blue ocean.
The scene is about a pod of killer whales going after a grey whale mother and her calf. The chase lasted for about 6 hours until the mother had no choice but to leave her calf behind after tirelessly attempting to pushing her young to keep swimming. The killer whales only engulfed the tongue and the jaw of the young calf.
Contrasting to some of Tang's other energetic and ferocious animal murals, this calf has no lively gestural marks around its body and has no aura—its lifeless. She uses various shades of blue chalk pastel to gently caress the calf and sends it off.
