Beauty and Decay
Beauty and Decay
2013. CHARCOAL ON WALL AT EMILY CARR UNIVERSITY OF ART & DESIGN. 7’ X 7’.
—
Beauty and Decay is combination of performance art and a mural on the wall.
'Beauty' in the title is representative of the black horse as the black beauty, while 'decay' is portrayed in the process where the drawing is sprayed down with water, and viewers watch the charcoal melt onto the floor and disappear in front of their eyes. Tang makes a statement that beauty does not last forever as represented in her art performance and it is not until the beauty is gone, where there is space for the next 'beauty' to emerge.
